MATERIAL IN TIME is a platform for integrating both the wealth of materials supporting
Japanese traditional arts and crafts and new materials created through advanced
research and development with design and communicating them to the world. In
today’s world, there are a variety of different materials; how will these materials be
involved in life, how will they align with the times 100, or even 200 years from now?
There are elements necessary for objects people use that have n ot changed over the
passage of time ‒ that they please the five senses, that they be beautiful to look at and
pleasant to touch. We focus on both manufacturing and application processes through
the joy of acquiring new sensations, the beauty that can be fel t from things precisely
because they have been well-used, and through materials, so that we comprehend the
wisdom and the skills of our predecessors and preserve them for the future, With
MATERIAL IN TIME, we provide a place where we can consider things not only with
specialists involved in creation, but also with the general public. The venue, PMQ, a
stage for design and cultural dissemination, is not in Japan but in Hong Kong. How will
the people of Hong Kong ‒ an island nation like Japan ‒ react to materials disseminated
from Japan? Let’s experience designs created from traditional arts and crafts cultivated
through the years and from modern materials that stand to become traditional arts and
crafts in the future.
